There is hardly time to catch your breath as we move seamlessly from GW21 to GW22 and with so much to think about we could do with a week to fully prepare for the first Fantasy Premier League action of 2018.

2017 closed on a Man City great escape as they almost suffered their first defeat of the season except for legs of Ederson’s penalty save preventing Crystal Palace from sealing a dramatic victory. The bigger news coming off the back of that game though is the potential 2 month injury to Gabriel Jesus and KDB also being stretchered off – although his injury is thought to be less serious.

With doubts over Mo Salah for GW22 (who also limped off the pitch this weekend) it looks like being a tough start to 2018 for many FPL managers. We haven’t even mentioned Harry Kane’s illness yet – so I hope you have your notepad ready!

With so much going on, we are going to try and keep it fairly simple this week and will just be bringing you this abridged tips article and a captain picks article which will go out shortly after this.

Double Game Week 22 Is Here

We have been pushing for a few weeks now to get you guys to have a clear strategy going in to this game week, but even the most well thought out strategies will be put to the test with all the injury concerns. Our preferred strategy was to have 2 free transfers going in to GW22 which then gives you the option of bringing 3 players in (if needed) for just a -4 points hit.

If you already have Kane sitting on your bench then you can get by with perhaps just one or two signings going in to this game week – and it is going to be a late call as to whether the England man gets the captaincy. Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Heung-Min Son and Marko Arnautovic are all our top picks out of the double game weekers with Eriksen being the player who is most likely to play every minute of both games. The Danish international has played every minute of his last 5 games for Spurs and will be crucial to their efforts this week.

Dele Alli has hit form at just the right time but rarely completes 90 minutes, whilst Son has started the last 6 games and will be a likely replacement for Kane should he miss the first game against Swansea.

Arnautovic is the West Ham pick with 5 goals in his last 5 games and as a £6.9m midfielder he is a top differential pick.

Will Harry Kane Be Fit For Swansea?

The question of whether Kane will be fit to face Swansea is on most FPL manager’s lips and we are still no closer to knowing whether he will have overcome his illness in time for the game. The only blessing is that Spurs don’t play until Tuesday so even if he is fit for training on New Year’s Day he will most likely start the game.

Either way, he will almost definitely be fit for the game against West Ham and this alone could still warrant a captaincy selection in a normal game week – especially given his form (two hat-tricks in his last two games).

Our Other Top GW22 Picks

Away from the double game week players we have already mentioned we will be looking to the following players for good performances this week.

Sergio Aguero – A home game against Watford and finally almost guaranteed a starting place following the injury to Jesus. Aguero could be set to feature in a number of teams and is an excellent swap for Lukaku if you have him in your team.

Wilfried Zaha – Was still a handful against Man City and heads to Southampton next. He plays every minute and looks close to firing in a lot more points for himself in FPL and Palace in the league.

Mane – He has been used sparingly by Klopp over recent weeks and could be set for back to back games for the first time since GW17. A trip to Burnley won’t be easy but could be another good week for the Liverpool attackers.

Jamie Vardy or Riyad Mahrez – These two have been pretty consistent this season after a slow start. Jamie Vardy will relish another opportunity in this game to add to his 9 goals this season whilst Riyad Mahrez has scored 6 and assisted 9 this season. A game against Huddersfield represents a good opportunity for these two past favourites.

Whatever you choose to do ahead of GW22 – set your team up the way you decide, have it set before your New Year celebrations begin – as you’d hate to forget to sort your team in the morning. In terms of Kane, we will endeavour to get news out in ‘The Last Word’ tomorrow morning – we will be discussing the idea of triple captain in our captain picks article.
