It’s always a funny feeling when you get to the end of the Premier League season but with a World Cup just around the corner we will be ready to go again for FPL before long. We take a look at the final game week 38 captain picks in a weekend full of meaningless fixtures for many and a couple of important games for others.
Chelsea and Liverpool are the only two sides with something to play for and with Arsene Wenger taking charge of Arsenal for the final time it could be argued that that is another game that will be taken seriously.
We assess the top selections for GW38 captaincy below:
GW38 Captain Pick No.3: Aubameyang
One of the GW37 heroes was Aubameyang with 3 goals and an assist over the two fixtures. Arsenal say farewell to Arsene Wenger in a game that is bound to be emotional for the visitors, whilst the home side will be relaxed after securing safety in the Premier League following two impressive results against top sides.
Arsenal were up against it after being reduced to 10 men early on when they met Leicester in midweek but with the home side having exerted huge efforts last week we expect to see a good away win here.
It probably won’t be in keeping with the 5-0 drubbing of Burnley last weekend but Aubameyang has been a star performer since joining in January with 9 goals and 4 assists in the league in just 12 games. We are backing him to fire again here.
GW38 Captain Pick No.2: Harry Kane
It looks like it is a straight shoot out between Harry Kane and Mo Salah for the final armband of the season and Kane is a very decent shout given the fixture and the desire to finish in third spot which is now in their hands. Leicester were much improved against Arsenal but some recent poor performances (not least the 5-0 defeat to Palace 2 weeks ago) stay fresh in the mind and give hope for a Kane demolition. Kane himself has not been in the best of form of late but he has still managed to score 3 in his last 4 games and he will want to sign off the season with as many goals as possible.
If you don’t have our number one pick then the other two suggested here are great alternatives.
GW38 Captain Pick No.1: Mo Salah
It would almost be a crime not to select Mo Salah as captain for GW38 after what has been a sensational season. If you dropped him for GW37 then you probably made a good call but it is well worth bringing him back for this final game against Brighton – after all, his price tag of £10.4m is a bargain compared to what he will be next season!
Liverpool may well have a Champions League final to play a week after this game but they will probably play their best 11 in light of needing to at least draw to secure 4th spot and also with the need to get some consistency in their play ahead of the big final.
Salah is of course the main man at Liverpool and with Brighton sitting pretty on 40 points they have little to motivate them and some players may be thinking about their summer holidays. Liverpool scored 5 in the reverse fixture earlier this season (although amazingly Salah didn’t score) and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that we will see a similar scoreline here.
